Well, Thundercats was made by Topcraft for Rankin/Bass (as were the animated LOTR movies and animated The Hobbit movie. I wouldn't call those anime either). Topcraft didn't exactly become studio Ghibli. It's more like Studio Ghibli was founded by Hayao Miyazaki and most of the people from Topcraft jumped on board. Tokuma, the company of which Studio Ghibli is a subsidiary, then either bought out Topcraft or Topcraft simply closed down. Sorry – I just really like Studio Ghibli; Topcraft....not so much. Anyway, I saw some Speed Racer here and there when I was really, really little. I recall always thinking 'WTF?' whenever I watched because the English dub voice actors had to talk so freaking quickly to say everything in the script. Everyone was so hyperactive and I didn't know why. I didn't know what anime was back then. The first anime that absolutely blew me away and made me completely separate anime from cartoons in my mind was Spirited Away. Cartoon Network's Adult Swim is probably what actually hooked me, starting from the very beginning of the programming, when Yu Yu Hakusho was showing just after Inuyasha.
