I started with Red version, and I spent so much time playing it... that was when the game had just came out. I then began playing the card game and was shunned by some of my friends for it, and then I quit (not because of them). Just recently, I picked up Pearl and have fell in love with Pokemon all over again. It's such an amazing game, despite the fact that each one pretty much has the same runthrough.
It's like playing one game over and over again, but what's different is that there is more replay value (to me) because there are various events to experience, sights to see, and Pokemon to catch!

DP are pretty good, almost as good as GSC and about the same/bit better than RBY.

My first was Silver, then I got a bunch more (that are in my closet somewhere, and I can't remember which specific versions because I have so many). I actually haven't played my Gameboy any recently (because I've been playing KH for the thousandth time), but my favorite, I think, would be Silver, simply because that's what got me started. I haven't even bought Pearl or Diamond though, and I don't really plan on it.

Red was great, but Yellow was awesome because Pikachu could follow you around and make faces when you clicked on him. But when that yellow rat made a mean face, I admit, I wanted to stab him. Silver and Gold were probably the best because you could get 16 badges, and Ho-oh was #1.
But what am I kidding, they were all great! Wish I could say the same about the series. It's like watching prepubescent young adults (how old were they? did they age in pokeland?) play with mutated lab experiments. Char Charmander Char! I used to watch the series...I still watch the movies.
