Default How would you make things more fun?

Basically, it has come to my attention that this forum is shit ass boring. Now, I think that one way of picking up some fun is by organising some contests, events. Ones off the top of my head:
  • Flaming contest (who wouldn't want to participate in that?).
  • FFTrivia contest (We are an FF forum...).
  • Poetry contest (there seems to be quite a lot of poetry in the poetry forum, so this might work).
  • Writing contest (I think we ahve that right now, but I'm pretty sure it's not getting the attention it needs).
  • Graphics contest (with all those sig makers there should be enough people willing to participate).
  • Debating contest (might not work, due to lack of posters in PC, might as well ignore).
Mind you, all of these are very cliched, and it would be very nice if somebody could think up of something original.

Also, as a reward for winning a contest, since we don't seem to have Gil, GP or Rupees anymore, I wanted to propose a small icon (we had that trophy icon once already) under the user information in the postbit. It's a hack that was already here, I don't see how it can't be restored.

May I also propose that the gaming arcade be installed on the forums. It's a bunch of flash games that are not linked to posting, so, unlike most other hacks, they can't possibly provoke spamming, but if you reward the top gamers with something, it can be a fun activity to engage in while on FFE.

And also I suggest some of you there [pokes people in the mod forum] think up of a way to reward for long/intelligent posts, or something of the kind.

Lastly, I would like to see an FFE member's world map.

Anywayz, I'm awaiting suggestions from other people and hoping that some of the staffers take notice of this thread *requests a sticky*

Shut up, you oversexed product of american advertising.

I'd be interested in Debating, and possibly Flaming. The rest, such as Poetry, sounds a bit lame. Most people suck at poetry and don't even know it. Aww, how sad.

As a OCUK member, their forum is based upon the Mafia and it's ranks... among it's 10,000 members.

They have the system of "Men Of Honour" at the end of every year. A group of members selected by the forum authorities to be promoted to the "Respected among all" level.

They are given the custom avatar with the year 2003/2002/2001 title on the avatar. And their custom title of Man Of Honour.

FFE could create something along the same lines. This get's back to the icon thing.

Also on UKAN forums [we have forum leaders link] they have UKAN Staff and Dignitaries, on there they have all the members mods, smods, admins, respected members, members who have contributed in so many ways, Members that have donated money etc etc.

It's all very popular among the members, hey I don't need to tell you just go to those two forums with their 10000+ members.

Yeah and the pr0n is always a good thing.. ah the old staff thread.

How about bringing the market back? But instead of giving Gil for regular posts, reward Gil for making good posts.

It's really a very easy way to make people post more in the more silent forums, such as the Politically Correct or the Writer's Craft. Simply reward one or three gil for making a good post. Of course, FFE has a huge mod team to be able to do all that. For example, an exceptionally long post in PC would earn 10 gil.

That way posting is encouraged outside the Spam forums (of course, things like the bank and donating wouldn't exist, to make sure Gil doesn't spread). Right now the spam games forum makes up almost half of FFE's total posts, and that's just not right.

What I don't want to see, however, is just to see this thread kind of die without receiving any attention from the staff, like this one: http://forums.ffextreme.com/showthre...&threadid=2739

Sounds like a good idea Travnia, seems like it would be very sucessful among the members. Its nice to see someone making a constructive post instead of just complaining
I mean, what member doesn't strive for respect among there fellow posters? It would give members something to aim for, rather then a shitload of gil.

The standard, writing, art, poetry and graphics competitions are a good bet, they always do well on other forums so we'll get busy organising somethings pretty soon along those lines. The only thing is, I remember when I used to mod the your creations forum, I ran an art contest and we only got 4 entries. The level of interest was incredibly poor at the time, so before we make any arrangements for any particular contest, I'd like to see how many people would actually enter first.

I also like the idea of a debate contest, but as you say, activity in PC is pretty low, but a contest with some form of reward may be just the ticket to kick it into gear. I'd like to discuss this one further with you at some point Edman.

Now the flame contest, heh, I tried that before and Roth reacted badly to it. lucky for us, Roth doesn't come on that much these days. So hell, I'd be up for a flaming competition, I'd be happy to make a flaming forum if the members wanted one, although I'd only really want to see decent flames, not pathetic ones like "you are gay!".

And while I hated the old Battle hack and the forum money before, if it was run in the way you suggest I'd be in favour of it making a return, having seen such systems work effectively elsewhere. But really we'd need Roth's input on that one.

Wesley, you rule, but no porn forum...some people are into weird stuff, alst time we had a porn forum Drifter wouldn't stop posting scat stuff.

Also I like what Travnia has suggested, legendary members and such should get some form of recognition or something, it might make for a nice addition, and perhaps we could catalogue what these respected and legendary members have done in some kind of hall of fame.

I'll try and think of some other things I can add to this.

This can take the place of the old events planning thread, it's best to keep members in the loop anyway.

That's why I did not propose an art contest, but a graphics one :P

There's nothing wrong with a "Training thread" in the flaming forum Besides, Dave's canadian, that's like begging to ignore him.

I'm not talking about the evilness that is the battle hack, but the system that was in place before that - with Gil and the market. And awards for good posts, not just posts. Of course, this is a bit of a strain on the mods, since posts need to be rewarded post by post, and not automatically.

It's all about standing out in the crowd that motivates people. And if that motivation can be turned to making better and more posts, you cannot go wrong.

I'm still worried that this is still a tad too much talking and too little doing :S

I know you weren't talking about the battle hack, i just mentioned it for the hell of it, it shouldn't be too great a strain on the mods, if they're doing their jobs and checking for shit posts it can't take too much more effort to donate a few GP for good posts or whatever so that's not a worry to me. Although I think a few arguments might break out about favouritism, especially if some find it hard to amass the GP they desire, but whatever.

We've already got a vote on to get a flame forum, an RPB tournament is going on right now...we don't want too many competitions goingon at any one time because they might detract interest from one another, also we're currently in the process of assigning forums to the mods to focus on, when that's done and they're in their area of specialisiation it should be pretty easy to get the other competitons sorted.

On an old forum I used to moderate I organised a Games Review Contest, where people posted there reviews of a particular game and a panel of judges decided which one was the most well-written/creative/entertaining. It went down pretty well as I recall. Obviously since this is primarily a gaming forum it would probably be easier to break the reviews down into different genres but I think it could be pretty sucessful.
